St. Petersburg Yacht Club Turns 100

From The St Petersburg Downtown Newsletter:

The St. Petersburg Yacht Club marks its 100th anniversary this year, with a number of gala events and activities planned to celebrate the occasion.
Organized in 1909 with the purpose “to promote, encourage and protect interests of boating and boatsmen in and about the city of St. Petersburg,” the yacht club had a fitful start.
According to historian Carl Grismer, nothing definite was accomplished until 1916. Then, a group of the city’s movers and shakers, led by William Straub of the St. Pete Times, the Evening Independent’s Lew Brown, and George Gandy of
Gandy Bridge fame, decided to jump in and revitalize the organization.
Action followed. A group of charter members were promptly signed up, and $15,000 was raised to construct a new clubhouse.
A problem surfaced, however. The Yacht Club was without “yachts.”

St Petersburg’s Own “Blind Man’s Colour”

Local (St Petersburg, Florida)  boys make good…  MusicVideos.  And,   of  coursemusic-blog fodder.

On a recent Friday in St. Petersburg, Kyle Wyss and Sheridan Willard were sipping health drinks at Central Cafe and Organics when in through the door walked Orhan Chettri and Ben Goodman.
Greetings were issued. Introductions were made. Small talk was exchanged.
And with that, the group Blind Man’s Colour became, for the first time ever, a full band.
This might come as a surprise to some, considering a growing number of prominent music blogs and bloggers — including Kanye West and Grizzly Bear’s Ed Droste — have heaped praise upon Blind Man’s Colour this spring. Pitchfork included a song on a recent podcast. The band’s forthcoming album, Season Dreaming, due in August on Brooklyn’s Kanine Records (Chairlift, Northern State, Oxford Collapse), is drawing comparisons to Animal Collective.
