The Best Way to Spend your St Pete Pride Day!

From tampabay.metromix:

Each year in June, St. Pete’s Central Ave. (Grand Center Business District) closes down to traffic and turns into the main drag for the St. Pete Pride Parade.  It has historically been St. Pete’s biggest festival and celebration, and is Florida’s largest Gay Pride Festival.  This years festivities won’t disappoint as they are predicted to be bigger and grander than ever!  The day (Saturday, June 27) starts off bright and early with the Una Voce Pride Pancake Breakfast at the King of Peace MCC (3150 5th Ave. N.) from 7-10a.m. where parade goers can load up on much needed carbs to help fuel them throughout the day with the all you can eat pancake breakfast.  The breakfast is $6, with $1 being donated to St. Pete Pride.

The festivities then continue across from Georgie’s Alibi (3100 3rd Ave. N) where everyone participating in this years St. Pete Pride Promenade will line up from 10-11a.m.  Then, a mixture of entertainers, local poliltical officials and businesses will march or ride on themed floats towards the Street Festival (btwn. 20th and 28th Streets on Central Ave.) carrying the world’s largest Pride flag to the end of the parade route.

In addition to the Parade and Promenade, the St. Pete Pride Street Festival will offer lots of fun things to do!  There will be live music and entertainment throughout the day, as well as a kid’s corner to keep the little ones entertained.  There will be a variety of food and beverage vendors throughout the festival, as well as local GLBTQ-friendly businesses and organizations offering free goodies and info.

For a complete listing of the month long festivities that correspond with St. Pete Pride, visit the website.

IronKids St Pete Triathlon This Weekend

Baywalk

The IronKids St. Petersburg Triathlon kicks off this weekend in St. Petersburg, FL drawing youth ranging from 6 to 15 years of age for a weekend of fitness and fun. In support of the community event that inspires children to lead healthy lifestyles, BayWalk invites all families from the Tampa Bay area to visit the courtyard on Saturday, June 6 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for special music, street performers and exclusive retail offers.

“We wanted to show our support for IronKids while also offering families the chance to come out and enjoy a free event,” said Ciminelli Real Estate Principal and BayWalk Rep Hunter Swearingen. “We have great music for kids, an extraordinary balloon artist and an award-winning magician in the works – and retailers from Ben & Jerry’s to Muvico and Sunglass Hut have made generous special offers.”

BayWalk’s free public event is one of many exciting festivities planned for the IronKids weekend. The triathlon itself, supported by local partners including the City of St. Petersburg and Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater, takes place Sunday, June 7 at 8:00 a.m. The swim will be held at Spa Beach alongside the Pier, and the bike course will encompass closed roads such as Bayshore Drive and 2nd Avenue South. Participants will see a scenic run course utilizing grass trails around Spa Beach Park. All finishers will receive a commemorative medal and trophies will be awarded for those within the Senior Division. Distances for the IronKids Race will vary, depending on the age of participants:

-Junior (ages 6 to 8): 50-yard swim, 2-mile bike and 500-yard run
-Intermediate (ages 9 to 11): 150-yard swim, 4-mile bike and 1-mile run
-Senior (ages 12 to 15): 300-yard swim, 8-mile bike and 2-mile run

“St. Petersburg is thrilled to host the IronKids Triathlon this summer,” said St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker. “I applaud the IronKids mission and am thankful that they have chosen St. Petersburg for their Florida event. It will give kids throughout the region an opportunity to not only compete, but to learn about fitness and have fun while they’re doing it.”

Friendly Natives-Hot Nites-Uh… Shuffleboard?

The faded sign outside the St. Petersburg Shuf...
Image by AFP/Getty Images via Daylife

IT was late on a Friday night and in deference to the full moon R.E.M.’s ”Man on the Moon” played through speakers attached to an iPod. A group of tattooed and goateed men and women was beginning to form, punching messages into their cellphones, lugging coolers and stubbing out cigarettes.

It could have been any gathering in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, but there were palm trees lining the nearby sidewalk, a warm breeze coming in from Tampa Bay, and the activity that was about to commence was shuffleboard. ”It is one of the few sports that you can play holding a beverage,” said Chris Kelly, 39, as he brandished a cue in one hand and opened a Coke with the other.

The spake the NY Times a couple of years ago. Williamsburg? Brooklyn? Really?

About a year-and-a-half ago, the 83-year-old club started the St. Pete Shuffle — free play to rockin’ music every Friday night until 11 — to inject some young blood into the sport. To be sure, no self-styled ironist can resist a retro activity set to a soundtrack of such indie darlings as Death Cab for Cutie and the Decemberists. Typically, 150 people show up for the event.

And the Chicago Trib chimes in.

Go there yourself. You will make friends, despite your best efforts. And remember: At night, no one can see you sweat.
